Massi,
I don't think the DBL should be changed right now since everything is in place. And I think that program should continue next year since it could be a way for people to get used to paddling then transition to the competitive team.

As a way to recruit new members for either the DBL league or the competitive team, I think we should introduce the saturday-open-paddles. These would be the 1-hour training sessions open to the public. My suggestion is that we have them on the 1st & last Saturday of June/July/August/Sept at 12:30. In the past we have not had races schedule on these weekends, and fixing the time helps people plan for volunteering.
If the time is 12:30, we can also fit any DBL practices in after the competitive practice.

In short, I'm proposing that for next year we have our usual competive practices.
In addition to that:
-- schedule DBL practices at 10:30 on Saturdays
-- schedule Open Paddles at 12pm on the 1st and 4th Saturday of the month.

Regarding fees, Open Paddlers can only come 3 times. If they want to come more than that perhaps we can charge a "fundraising" fee of $10 per person.

Massi:
I am thinking the Rec league would take the place of DBL. The Rec league would have their practice Sat. mornings after the racing team practice so that of additional Paddlefish want another workout, we can stay and paddle with the Rec league.

The Rec league would receive instruction in dragonboating and have a view of Pittsburgh while learning the paddle techniques. You can leave it up to them if they want another practice during the week.

Dear All,

Please feel free to comment in this page about the ADBL changes from Tue to Sat and the Recreational Outings as a way to expose more people to DB.

I am very happy that you all liked the rec. idea but I am now a bit confused about moving the ADBL from Tue to Sat and the relation between the ADBL and the Recreational Outings.

Here are my thoughts and what confuses me:
1. I am not sure I can move the league day in such a short notice. We have put several ads around PGH about this league that is set for Tue nights. As you may know sometime people show up there without registering online so I am not sure it is a great idea to change this upcoming (07/28/09) Tue night session.
2. Also, I am not so clear about the relation between the league and the recreational outing. You like the idea on having the rec.outing on saturday. That is great. Now, when we finished the conversation I thought you told me to ask TRRA to have the ADBL on Sat nights. Now here is my confusion. Were you talking about just the ADBL or also for the rec-outing?
2.1. If only for the ADBL then I can ask on Tue, to the participants, what they think about moving it to Sat and see how many pfish members can come on Sat as well.
2.2. If you meant both, the rec-outing and ADBL, then I am wondering why the ADBL participants have to be mixed with the rec-outing. You see, the way I see the ADBL is a way to learn about DB and also as a skill, at least as it is setup right now. We have set up the league as some sort of program in which after 4 weeks the participants will feel confident of being in a DB and potentially ready for a bit of racing. The rec-outing is not set up that way, at least in my mind. It is more a way to spend some time outside on the water and enjoy the rivers of Pittsburgh and doing that on a dragon boat. This has not to be in this way. We can do anything we want.
2.3. Also, we have to decide on what to charge participants of the rec-outing in case they don't want to join the league, TRRA, nor the team. If it is less than $20 per person, then they could ask "why joining the ADBL if I can paddle for cheaper in the rec-outing?".
3. I think that yesterday was good to see what people thought about it and that you like the idea of the rec-outings, but I think we need to thing things through a bit more. For examply, I was thinking about having the outing right after our practice on Sat, that way we don't have to ask people that already paddled and would like to paddle with the rec-outing to come back to Millvale in the evening.

If any of you is interested on talking about this more please email me (massi.cen@gmai.com) or just post your suggestions here.
