2009 Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Challenge
Dragon boat racing has its 2000-year-old roots in China and a strong 8-year tradition on the three rivers of Pittsburgh. Full of color and excitement, the races feature 44-foot boats with ornately carved and brightly painted dragon heads and tails. The boats hold up to 20 paddlers, plus a drummer and a steersperson, and race 500 meters with power generated by human muscle, heart, and timing.
Formerly part of the Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Festival, the 2009 Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Challenge (PDBC) will be held on the Allegheny river on the North Shore near by the PNC Park as part of the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta and are proudly hosted by Three Rivers Rowing Association (TRRA) and Steel City Dragon-Boat Association, Inc. (SCDBA), and the Pittsburgh Paddlefish Dragon Boat Team. Local novice teams will enjoy the fun; experienced teams will enjoy the challenge; everyone will enjoy and experience the excitement of the competition.

Start a team
You (yes, you!) can organize a dragon boat team; no experience necessary. You’ll need 14-20 friends, family members, or co-workers of any quasi-adult age or size. The only prerequisite is the ability to have a good time and a lot of fun! New teams can sign up for practice sessions (try our two “Quick Start” practice sessions) with TRRA or SCDBA which will provide coaching, a steersperson, and two practices before race day. As alternative a short introduction will be given just before racing. For more details about Quick Start session you can download or print the Quick Start flyer for the 2009 PDBC by clicking on this link: Flyer for 2009 PDBC Quick Start Sessions
